Like Donald Trump has been to America, my stepfather was to me 50 years ago

Almost four years ago, I wrote about how the election of Trump had me feeling the same then as I did when I was a kid with an abusive, alcoholic stepfather. I just re-read my blog. It’s still on point.

The feelings were the same only 50 years apart. They were a “combination of anger, frustration, and helplessness.” And note that this was before all the nauseating atrocities of the Trump presidency.

Now, I’m having the same feelings when my Mom finally got rid of the jerk stepfather as America now works to get rid of the jerk president Donald Trump.

Purging an abuser from your life is never easy. To paraphrase Martin Luther King, Jr., “The oppressor never wants to give up power without a fight.”

The feelings I’m having now are very similar to the feelings I had when my mother made her future ex-husband leave. The feelings were:

Vindication — I always knew he was a piece of shit and he proved it virtually every single day.
