CHET STUMPLE, an older man

STEVE THE TELEPHONE MAN, a younger man

SCENE
The front porch of an old house in a rural area. CHET sits in a rocking chair on the porch. Below the porch is a flower bed.

The action begins with CHET rocking slowly and looking off. He coughs some, spits some and mutters under his breath some.

CHET
Son-of-a-bitch….

Enters STEVE. He carries a ladder and wears a tool belt and a hard hat. He is studying the wires above and then notices CHET.

STEVE
Howdy.

CHET
Who the hell are you?

STEVEN
Telephone man.

CHET
What the hell you want?

STEVE
Got a call about the phone lines. This 242 Old Woods Way?

CHET
You see the street sign when you turned down here?

STEVE
Yup.

CHET
You see the numbers on that mailbox?

STEVE
Yup.

CHET
You stupid?

STEVE
Nope. (laughs) Just blind.
